As a busy working mom, I decided to turn to minimalism as a way to simplify my life. I noticed that I was getting so overwhelmed by everything we had accumulated. I feel like I spent the past 10 years trying to fill up my space and now I'm trying to actively undo that.
This can be very difficult when you have kids. I get tired of seeing all the minimalist posts that say "it's easy with kids!" Yes, it can be easy if your kiddos are little. But as they get bigger, they know what they like and you might have a kid that wants to keep EVERYTHING! Ugh.
One strategy that I use is to focus on the spaces I can control - for example, I keep my bedroom, my bathroom, the kitchen and the living room very tidy and minimalistic. I've decided to provide guidance but overall ignore my kids' rooms and the garage (my husband's space). This helps keep the peace.

I LOVE finding ways to make my home work for me. We have a smaller home, so finding practical solutions helps me manage all the stuff and feel at peace in my space.
Here are some small home ideas for simplified living:
Multi-functional furniture: When space is limited, it's essential to choose furniture that serves multiple purposes. Look for pieces like a sofa bed, storage ottomans, or a fold-down dining table to maximize functionality without taking up extra room. My daughter has a bed that has six drawers on the bottom for all her little items.
Vertical storage solutions: Make use of the walls in your home by installing shelves, hooks, or wall-mounted organizers. This will free up valuable floor space and keep surfaces clutter-free. I have a very small pantry, so I bought a hanging organizer to go on the door - it gave me so much more space!
Streamline your belongings: Take the time to go through your possessions and pare down to the essentials. Keep only items that bring you joy or serve a practical purpose in your daily life. I love to declutter around the holidays or season changes. I encourage my kids to let me help them do the same, but I don't force them.
Embrace a neutral color palette: Opt for light, neutral colors on your walls, floors, and furniture to create a sense of openness and airiness in your small space. This can help make the room feel larger and more cohesive. I love "ranch" colors or browns, tans, and dark greens.
Utilize natural light: Open up your curtains and let natural light flood into your home. Natural light not only makes a space feel brighter and more inviting but can also have a positive impact on your mood and well-being.
Incorporate plants: Bring a touch of nature indoors by adding houseplants to your small home. Not only do plants enhance the aesthetic of a space, but they also help purify the air and create a sense of tranquility. My favorite plants are a pothos, African violet, and peace lilly.
By implementing these small home ideas for simplified living, you can create a serene and clutter-free environment that promotes a sense of calm and well-being. Remember, minimalism is not about deprivation but rather about focusing on what truly adds value to your life and letting go of the rest.
Here are some of my FAVORITE items that's I've used to help minimize my home. I know, I know...I'm not supposed to buying things, but some items make everything easier!
